Travis Daniels was originally recruited to LSU as a wide receiver, but he was moved to safety and eventually found a home at cornerback. He has played every defensive back position in LSU's defense and is very familiar with the way Nick Saban likes to do things. He's big for a cornerback, but not especially fast and may end up playing safety - although Coach Saban says he's going to use him at cornerback.
Positives: A smart player who can cover and tackle well and is not afraid to attack running backs coming out of the backfield. His 6.5 tackles for a loss in 2003 are unusual for a cornerback. He has long arms and leaping ability that allow him to jump with wide receivers on fade routes or when fighting for the ball.
Negatives: He does not backpedal or turn and run well and will need to work on his technique to make it at the next level. He is more suited to zone coverage than man-to-man coverage.
Comments: Daniels was not Nick Saban's first choice for a cornerback in this draft. Saban was reportedly going to take Corey Webster (his other starting CB from LSU) in the second round, but the Giants beat him to the punch. While he was an effective player at the college level and is familiar with Coach Saban's defensive system, he'll need to work hard on his technique to make it in the NFL.
